When it comes to performing in drag, shoes can make or break a performance, according to Raj Ghatak, star of theatre show Miss Meena & the Masala Queens.
Inspired by the British Asian drag queen community, Miss Meena & the Masala Queens follows the story of once-fabulous drag queen Miss Meena who faces the challenges of a struggling nightclub, uncovering stories of men who dress in drag and exploring the meaning of family along the way.
Talking about his role in the show, Bollywood musical star Raj Ghatak said there are a number of key elements that combine for an effective performance in drag, shoes being a “crucial” factor.
Speaking to The Stage, Mr Ghatak said that shoes with heels that are too high are prohibitive for dancing, while low alternatives may hamper the overall image.
“Once you’ve got the shoes, they’ll inform your walk,” he said, adding that it’s wise to try on several pairs before making a choice.
While having the right pair of crossdressing shoes is one key consideration, makeup is another, he says, and eyebrows should be “sisters and not twins” – not identical but slightly different. Makeup is vital to creating the overall aesthetic and takes time, so having an extra pair of hands can be helpful, the actor advises.
The show launched earlier in May and will tour a select number of locations around the country during May and June, including Greenwich from May 24th to 27th, Windsor from May 30th to June 3rd, Southampton from June 6th to 10th and Leeds from June 13th to 17th.
