Hugely popular actor and drag act Sweetie – born Daniel Booth – has sadly passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer, aged just 51.
Sweetie was renowned around tIhe world for her rather raunchy sense of humour and her absolutely incredible lip syncing abilities. She first kick-started her career back in the early 90s, soon becoming a staple at the likes of the Slide, Pyramid, Jackie 60 and Boy Bar – and no doubt she inspired many of you out there to be brave and put your own act out there for the whole world to see.
She spoke to Paper Magazine last year, telling the story of how Sweetie was born. Apparently, the moniker came from a Jane Campion movie of the same name! Sweetie explained that she moved out to New York from a small town outside Detroit when she was just 19 but she didn’t have her first gay experience until she was 24 while doing a US tour of a play. The following year, Sweetie was created.
Speaking about her act, Sweetie said at the time: “I definitely have a dark sense of humour onstage. Very sick. But I think people know it always comes from a good place. There are some queens that are just really nasty, and I think my wit has a good bite to it, but I never think of it as mean spirited.”
Social media has come alive with all sorts of messages of hope and love for Sweetie now she’s passed, with people talking about what a legend she was, how lucky they feel having been able to see her show and what an absolute inspiration she was. What an amazing legacy to leave behind.
